Visit Our Pumpkin Patch in Charlotte, NC This Autumn

Pumpkins stacked on top of one another

Jim Bishop famously said, "Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons."

As the air turns crisp and leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of colors, families across the region head to The Hunter Farm and experience the “gold of autumn” for themselves. Here, it's not just about picking the perfect pumpkin. It’s about creating magical fall moments.

Whether you’re in search of that one great fall photo op or you just want to snag a great deal on a pumpkin to carve into a Jack-o-Lantern, we’re happy to help.

Visit our pumpkin patch in the Charlotte, NC area - and you’ll go home with more than just a pumpkin. You’ll go home with memories that last a lifetime.

All Aboard for Farm Fun

Picture this: a leisurely ride through rolling farm fields, where every bump on the rustic path adds to the charm and sets the stage for the adventure ahead.

Wagon rides at The Hunter Farm transport visitors to the petting zoo. At the barn, you’ll find a variety of friendly creatures waiting to make your acquaintance. From fluffy sheep to curious goats, this stopping point is a huge hit with kids and adults alike.

Planning a visit? Make sure to book your spot early. Reservations are required for the wagon ride, which is the only way to access the petting barn. And remember, your furry friends will have to sit this trip out - no dogs allowed on the farm.

Wagon rides cost $12 per person (children under 2 are free) and include a free pie pumpkin to take home with you. But you don’t have to settle for just the one pumpkin - you can also stay on board and travel to the pumpkin patch, where you can choose your own pumpkin, big or small, to take home.

Picking the Perfect Pumpkin

Finding the perfect pumpkin is an art, and at The Hunter Farm, we offer a fantastic selection. Before heading out, think about what you want from your pumpkin. Are you planning to carve a spooky jack-o'-lantern, or is it destined for a delicious pie?

When selecting a pumpkin, size matters. Larger pumpkins are great for carving but might not be ideal for cooking. Look for pumpkins with a smooth, even surface, free from blemishes or soft spots. Any of these issues can indicate rot or damage, which can unfortunately affect carving or cooking quality.

Once you've zeroed in on a few contenders, give each one a quick test. Gently tap the pumpkin; a hollow sound usually indicates a healthy, ripe gourd. Check the stem as well - it should be firm and securely attached. A brittle or loose stem is a warning sign that the pumpkin may not last long.

Don’t forget to bring along a sturdy bag or basket to carry your pumpkins home. They can be heavier than they appear, and you should avoid carrying a pumpkin by its stem. If the stem falls off, it can reduce your pumpkin’s shelf life.

Caring for Your Pumpkin “Post-Patch”

You've picked your pumpkin, and now it's time to make sure it lasts! With the right care, you can keep your pumpkin fresh throughout the fall season. Start by cleaning it thoroughly with a mild bleach solution (one tablespoon of bleach per quart of water). This will remove any bacteria or fungi that could hasten its decay.

Once it’s clean, dry your pumpkin completely and store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, as these conditions can speed up deterioration. If you plan to carve your pumpkin, wait until a day or two before you want to display it, as carved pumpkins have a much shorter shelf life.

For those who prefer uncarved pumpkins as decor, consider applying a thin coat of petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to seal in moisture and give your pumpkin a pretty sheen.

Creative Ways to Use Your Pumpkin

Pumpkins aren’t just for carving and smashing after Halloween!

Here are some fun ideas to get the most out of your pumpkin purchase:

  • Gourmet Opportunities: From soups and pies to roasted seeds, pumpkins are a nutritional powerhouse (and, if we’re being honest, they’re absolutely delicious). Roast the flesh for a sweet pie or blend into a creamy soup. Don't toss those seeds - they can be roasted with a sprinkle of salt for a healthy snack.

  • Decorative Touches: Use your pumpkins as part of your autumn decor. Small pumpkins can be painted or glittered for a chic centerpiece, while larger ones make perfect planters for fall flowers. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Jack-o-lanterns are great, but there are so many other ways you can get creative.

  • Family Fun: Host a pumpkin carving contest! Invite friends and family to bring their pumpkins, gather some carving tools, and see who can create the most impressive design.
