Why Choose a Fresh-Cut Christmas Tree?

Before we get into what makes The Hunter Farm’s Fraser Firs so special, let's talk about why choosing a fresh-cut tree is worth it. A real Christmas tree brings so much more to your home than just stunning holiday decor.

Natural Beauty and Scent

No artificial tree can replicate the lush scent and vibrant beauty of a real pine. The fragrance alone evokes warm holiday memories and fills your home with cheer - something no scented candle can truly match.

Sustainability

Real Christmas trees are a renewable resource grown on farms like Chestnut Hill Tree Farm, The Hunter Farm’s partner in Ashe County, NC.

These trees are harvested and replanted every year, making them an environmentally friendly option compared to artificial trees that eventually end up in landfills.

Tradition

Picking out a fresh Christmas tree is an event in itself - a family tradition that kicks off the festive season. There’s something memorable about bundling up, walking through the tree lot, and selecting the one tree that feels just right.

The Star of the Show: Fraser Firs

When it comes to Christmas trees, Fraser firs reign supreme - and The Hunter Farm proudly offers them fresh and pre-trimmed. Known for their beautiful shape, sturdy branches, and soft needles, Fraser firs have long been a favorite for holiday decorating.

Why are these considered classics, even more popular, perhaps, than other star contenders like spruces and balsams? At The Hunter Farm, there are a few things in particular we love about Fraser Firs:

  • Great for Ornaments: These trees have strong branches that can hold even your heaviest heirloom ornaments without sagging.

  • Long-Lasting Needles: Fraser firs hold onto their needles longer than most other types of Christmas trees, giving you weeks of enjoyment before they start to shed.

  • Lush, Full Appearance: Their iconic symmetrical shape, vibrant green color, and soft silver undersides make them a picture-perfect centerpiece.

  • Pleasant Aroma: Their natural pine scent is subtle yet unmistakable - a hallmark of the holiday season.

Tips for Selecting the Perfect Christmas Tree

Family looking for a Christmas tree together

So we’ve sold you on Fraser firs - awesome! Now, it’s time to find the perfect one for your living room.

Choosing the right tree can feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry. We’ve done this a time or two, and we have a few tips to help you find the one that’s perfect for your home.

First, be sure to measure. In the world of carpentry, the saying is to always measure twice and cut once, and when it comes to Christmas, you’ll only be able to cut once - so you need to make sure you get an accurate measurement of your space!

Figure out how much room you have before heading to the tree lot, including ceiling height and width. Most Fraser firs measure between 6–9 feet tall, so plan accordingly.

When you get to our lot, you can check the tree for freshness by gently tugging on the needles. If very few fall off, the tree is as fresh as can be and will last for quite some time in your home.

Also put some thought into the desired shape you want for your tree. Each one is unique, but in general, a tree that’s full and symmetrical is what you should be scouting for.

Last but not least, plan ahead for ornament weight. If you have heavy ornaments or intend to use quite a few decorations, look for a tree with sturdy branches that can support them without bending. Again, the fresher the better here.

Caring for Your Christmas Tree From The Hunter Farm

To make sure your Fraser fir stays fresh and beautiful throughout the holidays, follow these simple care tips:

  • Use a Fresh Cut: Trees at The Hunter Farm are pre-trimmed, but make another cut at the base of the trunk before placing it in water. This opens up the pores and helps the tree absorb water.

  • Water Frequently: Your tree will need plenty of water, especially in the first week. Keep the stand filled to prevent the trunk from sealing up.

  • Avoid Heat Sources: Place your tree away from heaters, fireplaces, and direct sunlight, which can dry it out.

  • Add Lights Strategically: Use LED lights instead of traditional string lights - they’re cooler and less likely to dry out the tree.
